2025 AMAC BAIT UPDATE

SENT ON BEHALF OF TODD WILLIAMS, CHAIR, ATLANTIC MACKEREL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (AMAC)

Dear Members,

I would like to inform you that based on preliminary data, bait landings for Atlantic mackerel are 57 tonnes. This represents over 25% of the first 220 tonne quota for the personal-use bait fishery. You will receive the next update once 50% of the quota is reached followed by weekly updates.

Note, for the 2025 season, the Minister has set a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) of 500 tonnes (t), which includes 440 t for the personal-use bait fishery, and 20 t each for the bluefin tuna bait exemption, scientific sampling, and bycatch. The first 220 tonnes are currently available in line with the opening of the bait fishery on May 15, 2025. The second 220 t release will also be conveyed through a Notice to Fish Harvesters with an expected release date in September, to provide fairness in access for harvesters across all regions within Atlantic Canada and Quebec.

Thank you
